WARM GREETINGS FROM THE CITY OF SMILES!

Last year, we celebrated Masskara Festival again after two years of hiatus because of the pandemic. We brought back smile to Bacolod. Close to 100,000 tourists flew to Bacolod to experience the fun and flavors of Masskara. On Closing Night, a total of 110,000 revelers filled the whole stretch of Lacson Street to enjoy original, world-famous chicken inasal and the best treats of the local cuisine. No less than President Ferdinand Marcos himself joined the celebration, and described it “the most successful Masskara Festival in the history of Bacolod City.” Aliw Awards 2022 also recognized Masskara Festival as the “Best Festival Practices and Performances” in the country.

This year, we will make the best even better; the smile even sweeter. Last year, we celebrated resilience and recovery. This year, we celebrate growth.

We are organizing more events that will showcase the rich culture of Bacolod. We are bringing the spectacle to more locations in the city. We will treat our guests to a diversity of experience that engage all senses. The benefits for businesses is immense, in terms of sales revenue and brand visibility. Thus, I hope you will partner with us and together produce the biggest Masskara Festival.

Join us to celebrate and experience the colors, melodies and flavors of Bacolod City.

SEE YOU AT THE MASSKARA FESTIVAL!

HON. ALFREDO ABELARDO B. BENITEZ
MAYOR, BACOLOD CITY

HISTORY

OF MASSKARA FESTIVAL

The Bacolod MassKara Festival is a yearly festival held in Bacolod City, Philippines, culminating on the 3rd Sunday of October. It is one of the most popular festivals in the Philippines, and is known for its colorful masks and festive atmosphere.

The festival was born out of a crisis. In 1980, the sugar industry, which was the main source of income for the province of Negros Occidental, was in decline. This led to widespread poverty and unemployment. The second one was the tragic accident of the MV Don Juan travelling from Manila to Bacolod. This caused the death of 176 passengers and crew.

In an effort to lift the spirits of the people, the administration of former Mayor Jose “Digoy” Montalvo along with the help of the Art Association of Bacolod (AAB) came up with the idea of creating a festival that would celebrate the city’s resilience and its people’s famous smiles. They designed a mask with three smiling faces, and called it the “MassKara”. It literally means many faces. It was coined by Ely Santiago, a painter, cartoonist, and cultural artist.
